Austar Mine is the first mine in Australia to successfully implement the Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) mining method. The mine is extracting the Greta Seam of 6 m thickness at a depth of approximately 520 m. The main overburden unit is the Branxton Formation which is massive and strong (fine to medium sandstone/silty sandstone/pebbly bands).
