Fine slag with particle sizes in the range of 3–5 mm was ground into filler, 95% of which passed through a 0.075 mm sieve. The surface characteristics and chemical compositions of the two fillers (SSF and LF) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the aggregate image measurement system (AIMS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
Results. 5.1. Physical properties. The re-melted slags, which were left to cool in the crucibles (semi-rapid cooling), resulted in large pieces that were crushed to <4 mm for leaching tests. The chapter describes the characteristics of blast furnace slag and steel slag, the main two types of ferrous slag. Blast furnace slag is created during the melting and reduction of iron ore in a blast furnace, while steel slag is produced during the conversion of hot metal to crude steel or during the melting of scrap in various kinds of furnaces.
The reduced pellets are melted in closed MgO crucibles at 1873 K to study the effect of reduction degree on the characteristics of slag formed. The results reveal that the phosphorus content in the metallic phase can be brought down to 130 ppm merely by the self-fluxing slag, even though the slag weighs only about 8% of the metal.
